"Minimal" Rig Setup

My main rig currently consists of an Egnater Renegade 2x12 combo, an SKB 4U shallow rack case containing a Furman power supply, TC Electronic G-System, Shure in-ear monitor transmitter, and analog pedals that go into the G-System loops. Thankfully, it's a fairly compact setup and it doesn't take very long to set up or tear down, but there are times when I would like a more bare bones setup for impromptu jams or whatnot.

Of course the most bare bones you can get is to plug straight into the amp and go, but I did want at least a tuner, a boost pedal of some sort, and the Egnater footswitch. My Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster pedal isn't in any of the G-System loops in my main rig because it prefers to be plugged in direct from the guitar, but with the four-cable setup method I use it's not ideal for the pedal. I had also seen good reviews of TC Electronic's PolyTune tuner pedal, so since I wanted a tuner pedal anyway, I picked one up.

So now that I had an idea of what a "minimal" setup would be for me, I laid the two pedals and footswitcher in a line and measured how much pedalboard width I might need to hold everything together, which came to about 20 inches. I had heard good things about Pedaltrain pedal boards, so I checked out the different options and saw that the Mini seemed to be the best fit.

The board came not only with a soft gig bag, but also plenty of velcro and zip ties. I applied the rough-side velcro to the top two bars of the Mini, and then the soft-side velcro to the bottom of my Pickup Booster, PolyTuner, and Renegade footswitch. The footswitch had small rubber feet on the bottom, and I expected them to be applied with adhesive that I would need to tear off, but instead I was surprised to find they were actually rubber plugs that fit into the pre-drilled holes in the bottom of the footswitch casing. That made them very easy to pop off so I could apply the velcro. Chalk up another well thought-out feature of Egnater amps knowing that it's common to velcro pedals and footswitches to pedalboards.

Here's the end result:

After I laid out the pedals and footswitch thew way I wanted taking the connecting cables into account, I used the zip ties to bundle up the instrument cable (to the amp), 1-Spot power cable for the two pedals, and the long footswitch cable which was handy.

Overall, this minimal setup is pretty good at letting me play more directly into the amp while giving me good switching options with the very useful Egnater footswitch for channel, effects loop, reverb, and main volume 2 (solo boost). I have room on the board to add another pedal or two if I wanted, which is also a nice option. The only thing that I might want to add is an equalizer in the effects loop to have an overall mid boost on at all times to help make sure I cut through without needing to be too loud. Other than that, it's a convenient and portable "minimal" setup that could be useful in a jam situation. What kind of "minimal" setups have you owned or seen? Thanks and happy rigging.
